Excellent Presentation 2/12/10 @ Desert Regional Hospital

Today's round-table session was extremely enlightening; being able to hear from the industry professionals from the different departments at Desert Regional shed much light on how the CVEP externship program is designed to function, as well as the real-world effects and results of this program. I was quite impressed with Valerie Pitman's presentation, and would love for her to come to the high school where i teach to let the other teachers and our administrators see this. This makes so much more sense than what we are constantly being brainwashed by all the district propaganda about standardized "teaching in the boxes" and having everything structured like an elementary classroom, basically training kids and young adults to function only within the boxes - especially when we hear from industry leaders and personnel that they are looking for people to hire who can creatively think "outside of the box!" Please come and present your ppt to my high school, Valerie!!!! I can see how much this will lead to a better future for our students, and more importantly, a better, healthier society...which is the exact goal of education in the first place! MattE

  1. p.s. Yes, we should be preparing our kids for their future, not for specific test questions...
... these sorts of programs, such as this cvep, should be what the state of CA pushes. This is what is going to lead to economic development for the whole state and nation if the federal department of Ed. would follow. We would see such a huge growth in graduation rates, huge drops in unemployment, huge reductions in gang related crime & violence...the list goes on due the enormous impact that the focus on and exposure to kids' career options. But when the whole focus and exposure is about the standardized test questions, it leads to dropouts, and all of the above mentioned states and activities in a negative way...

  2. Yes, when the whole focus and exposure is about the standardized test questions classes become boring and not positive for the students. That is true. Students are similar to our bodies: We can all use a share of balanced diet. Not too much of this - a little bit of that here and there. (I dunno, I guess Im hungry?)

In any case - the students are missing recreational art classes, other classes like "Life Skills" not only for special needs, but for the regular population. Etc.

I believe our country used to think: "Let's get our students and faculty in stricter situations as a mandatory requirement to succeed. Students need 24/7 studies and work. Teachers could use A and B testing, testing and more testing in order to be equal to say: Japan or Germany for instance."

Well, personally that mentality is proving wrong.

Students don't want to come to school at all and many teachers are getting burned out quicker.

Im glad were still around to help those who want to succeed and obtain a real job among those who just want socialize and think of themselves as "All That" (In a High School setting of course)
Public education needs to get their act together and Career Pathways like these ARE part of the answer !!! ~ Mr Perez
