What is your main goal?
Write down your main goal or purpose when visiting the businesses at your job shadowing. Personally Im looking forward to honest answers from the business sector and somehow, I believe I will get them. Nothing can prepare a student better than the "real world" work experience and that rings true to us; the professional educators.

Catherine Levitt - Roundtable Comments
The enthusuasm and generosity of the DRMC participants was wonderful! I was particularly interested in the discussion of Medical Coding as a career/vocational skill that would be appropriate for the health academies. Several questions arose in my mind...The hospital apparently employees 16 people in this field with one position open at any given time. Assuming this is also true at JFK and Eisenhower, that means that 3 such positions would be available at any given time. If the various health academies turnout more than 9 (3 times the number needed), what happens to the others. To what other application could the skills learned be put?? Brings up the whole issue of how to prepare students for today's economic needs with the knowlege that these skulls will be obsolete in less than 3 years unless the student chooses to prepare him/herself for lifetime employ-ability (openness to change and tech interest/commitment) rather than life time career.

Excellent Presentation 2/12/10 @ Desert Regional Hospital
Today's round-table session was extremely enlightening; being able to hear from the industry professionals from the different departments at Desert Regional shed much light on how the CVEP externship program is designed to function, as well as the real-world effects and results of this program. I was quite impressed with Valerie Pitman's presentation, and would love for her to come to the high school where i teach to let the other teachers and our administrators see this. This makes so much more sense than what we are constantly being brainwashed by all the district propaganda about standardized "teaching in the boxes" and having everything structured like an elementary classroom, basically training kids and young adults to function only within the boxes - especially when we hear from industry leaders and personnel that they are looking for people to hire who can creatively think "outside of the box!" Please come and present your ppt to my high school, Valerie!!!! I can see how much this will lead to a better future for our students, and more importantly, a better, healthier society...which is the exact goal of education in the first place! MattE
